Thoughtful writing and the art of paying attention.

Too Much of a Good Thing

With temperatures almost up to 39°C outside, our air conditioner has been running almost continuously.

To stay comfortable, my wife had gradually been lowering the temperature during the day and at night.

At first, I didn’t think much of it.

Then yesterday morning I woke up around 4 a.m. shivering.

The room didn’t feel cold.

But I did.

Within a short time, my whole body ached.

My joints.

My limbs.

My spine.

Even my head.

I spent almost the entire day on my futon.

By the following morning, I felt completely normal again.

Looking back over the past few days, I wonder if I underestimated the effect of sleeping in a room that was simply too cold for me.

I don’t know for certain.

But from now on, I’ll be paying a little more attention to the thermostat.
