Thoughtful writing on life, learning, and place in rural Japan.

Unfamiliar Becomes Familiar

Typhoons have quietly become a normal part of life for me.

Back in the Netherlands, I experienced a few severe storms as well.

But those were occasional events.

Once every few years, perhaps.

Japan is different.

There is an actual typhoon season.

Although technically we are not quite there yet, a typhoon is passing through Japan today.

A few years ago, that probably would have felt unusual.

Something worth paying close attention to.

Now, it feels much the same as earthquakes have come to feel.

Not something to fear.

Just something to be aware of.

A part of life.

The biggest adjustment is usually making sure nothing loose is left outside in the garden.

A flower pot here.

A bucket there.

Anything that might decide to take flight.

What strikes me is how quickly unfamiliar things can become familiar.

At some point, what once felt foreign simply becomes another ordinary day.
