I have been composting for more than two years now.
Nothing fancy.
Just kitchen scraps.
Garden trimmings.
And the occasional earthworm I discovered while gardening.
For a long time, it felt like nothing was happening.
After all, I was trying to turn hard clay soil into fertile compost.
That takes time.
A lot of time, apparently.
Then something unexpected happened.
After my wife and I planted vegetables this year, potatoes and pumpkin suddenly started growing out of the compost itself.
Not where we had planned.
Not where we had planted.
Just where nature decided they should grow.
That was the moment I realized the compost had finally come alive.
The process had been working all along.
I simply could not see it yet.
Now I find myself looking forward to harvest season.
Not only because of the vegetables.
But because it feels like our garden is slowly transforming itself into a small organic food forest.
Nature has its own timing.
Its own plans.
And sometimes, the most interesting things grow exactly where you least expect them.
I find that both thrilling and comforting.
