The Compost Had Other Plans

I never planned to grow pumpkins.

Yet somehow pumpkins decided to grow anyway.

A few weeks ago, I noticed large green leaves emerging from our compost pile.

At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what they were.

Then the yellow flowers appeared.

They open when the sun shines and close again when the light fades.

Now the plant is spreading beyond the compost and slowly making its way into the garden.

I’m not stopping it.

In fact, I’m curious to see what happens next.

Will pumpkins actually grow?

If so, where will they appear?

How many will there be?

What colors will they have once they mature?

How large will they become?

The funny thing is that none of this was planned.

Had I decided to grow pumpkins myself, I would probably have carefully chosen a location, prepared the soil, and planted them with a specific goal in mind.

Instead, the compost had other plans.

All I can do for now is watch, wait, and observe.
