Sometimes It’s Worth Looking Further

My wife and I are spending the night near Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture.

She still had a free overnight stay available through her Marriott Bonvoy membership, so we decided to make a small weekend trip out of it.

The hotel itself is nice enough.

The weather, however, is not.

It has been raining most of the day, turning Lake Biwa into a grey and misty backdrop.

We knew that before arriving, so there were no surprises there.

The bigger surprise came when we started thinking about dinner.

Initially, we assumed we would simply eat at the hotel restaurant.

That seemed like the easiest option.

But after looking at the menu and walking around a bit, something felt off.

There was nothing particularly wrong with it.

It just didn’t feel like the experience we were looking for.

The hotel staff encouraged us to reserve a table before it became busy, but the more we thought about it, the less convinced we became.

So instead of settling for the first available option, we started looking elsewhere.

Eventually we found a restaurant called Morishima in Omihachiman specializing in Ōmi beef.

Getting there required a thirty-minute drive through the countryside.

Rice fields.

Narrow roads.

A destination that felt slightly uncertain.

Yet the moment we arrived, we knew we had made the right decision.

The meal was exceptional.

Quiet.

Intimate.

Exactly the kind of experience we had hoped for.

Driving back afterwards, I realized the evening wasn’t really about the food.

It was about something else.

Sometimes the first option isn’t the right one.

Not because it is bad.

Simply because it isn’t right for you.

The difficult part is that walking away from the first option often means stepping into uncertainty.

You don’t know whether something better exists.

You only know that what is in front of you doesn’t feel quite right.

Today we decided to keep looking.

And it turned out to be worth it.
