Thoughtful writing on life, learning, and place in rural Japan.

The recent heavy rainfall led me to delay planting my seeds in our raised beds. My wife remarked on the unusual amount of rain for this time of year. Despite this, I anticipated the forecasted rainfall and took advantage of the dry, 21-degree Celsius weather yesterday.

The day before yesterday, during an earlier rainfall, I observed water puddles where I decided to place Hügelkultur beds, utilizing them as sponges. Given our stone garden’s elevation on a man-made small hill, I strategically created mini swales to guide rainwater slowly to the sewers, aiming to evenly distribute water where needed.

For now, only time will tell if my strategy will work.
