I am currently reading The Story of Philosophy because it was a recommended read by Jim Rohn. Honestly, I have been having some difficulties because the book is written in a high level of English, which can be a bit old-fashioned for me as a non-native speaker, containing some fancy words. Nevertheless, I am determined to read the full book and am already over halfway through.
While I try to read a few chapters every day, I still find it challenging to comprehend the content. To tackle this, I’ve started reading out loud. This technique forces me to articulate the words while also hearing my own voice, which is reminiscent of how I learned Dutch during my teenage years. I would read books aloud, and it helped me grasp the language faster.
Surprisingly, this same trick works for reading a difficult book like The Story of Philosophy. When I read silently, the content doesnโt stick in my brain as well. However, reading aloud has improved my retention, and I find myself excitedly discussing the bookโs relevance with my wife.
Perhaps this technique has a name, but I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it may help others read through challenging texts as well.
