Why Swiss Dark Chocolate Beats Japanese Varieties

I have a love for dark chocolate, particularly Swiss dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content or higher, like the offerings from the brand Lindt. Here in Japan, I occasionally order a Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa bar online, but it is a luxurious indulgence. Consequently, I mostly opt for Japanese dark chocolate from grocery stores, either from Meiji or CGC. However, I still prefer Swiss-made dark chocolate over Japanese varieties. Why is that? The Swiss chocolate has a smoother and creamier texture, while Japanese dark chocolate, especially those with 72% cocoa or higher, often tastes drier and making it harder to bite into.

A Sweet Discovery

Yesterday, I made a delightful discovery at Costco: a 1.3 kg of Swiss dark chocolate pack from a brand I had never heard of called Swiss Delice. To my surprise, this brand is located in Birsfelden, Switzerland, right next to Basel, where I spent my teenage years. What a coincidence! In comparison to Lindt, Swiss Delice tastes nearly as smooth and creamy, making it my preferred choice over Meiji and CGC.

Swiss Delice offers authentic chocolate indulgences, 100% produced in Switzerland, emphasizing unmatched taste and quality in every creation. Their product range includes:

  • Extra Creamy Milk Chocolate: Individually wrapped pieces crafted from sugar, cream powder (20%), chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, dry skim milk, ground hazelnuts (1.9%), soy lecithin, and natural flavor.
  • 72% Dark Chocolate Noir Squares: Individually wrapped squares featuring rich cocoa content

The brand Swiss Delice is managed by Swiss Industries GmbH, based in Birsfelden. The company has been registered since September 30, 2011, actively trading various goods.

In 2021, several companies, including Chocolat Frey AG and Delica AG, merged to form Delica AG, aiming to strengthen their market position and effectively utilize synergies. Delica AG focuses on producing high-quality chocolates, snacks, cooking products, and coffee, supplying customers both in Switzerland and worldwide.

A Bargain Buy

Curious about the price of my 1.3 kg Swiss Delice dark chocolate? It cost me just a little less than 20 Euros! This is a steal, considering one Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa bar retails for 5 Euros per 100g here in Japan on Amazon! I’m hopeful that Costco Japan will continue to stock this gem even after I’ve indulged in my 1.3 kg of Swiss Delice dark chocolate.
