Eco-Friendly Futon Care: Sunlight’s Refreshing Power

One of the lessons I learned from my wife is the Japanese practice of airing out or sunbathing our futons on sunny days. She affectionately calls this “disinfecting the futon.” It’s quite common to see our neighbors hanging their bedding and futons outside, basking in sunlight.

After a day of letting our futon soak up the sun’s rays, I can’t help but notice the invigorating freshness that fills the air around us. Thereโ€™s something uniquely satisfying about that clean, sun-kissed scent!

Curiosity led me to dig deeper into this common practice here in Japan, but I was surprised to find a lack of clear resources detailing its origins or benefits. Regardless, I wholeheartedly believe it’s an incredibly eco-friendly method of keeping our bedding fresh and clean, and it connects us with nature in a simple yet effective way.
