I Thought Summer Baths Were Madness β€” Until I Tried Japan’s Cooling Onsen Tablets

Until recently, I never thought I’d take a hot bath in summer. Why would I? Like many people, I’d always associated hot baths with cold winter nights and preferred a cold shower to beat the Japanese summer heat.

But my wife had other ideas.

A few weeks ago, she introduced me to something I’d honestly never considered β€” summer onsen tablets. She asked me to buy a few and give them a try. And although I raised an eyebrow at the thought of voluntarily stepping into a warm tub during peak humidity, I trusted her instincts.

I’m glad I did.

To my surprise, the experience wasn’t anything like the sweltering hot soak I feared. Thanks to minty, refreshing ingredients in these seasonal bath tablets, the water gave off a cooling sensation that lingered on the skin, even after getting out of the bath. Instead of sweating it out, I actually felt revived. Some tablets had a fizzy, carbonated texture, others carried fresh citrusy scents, and all of them transformed my bathroom into a private, refreshing spa.

That first bath was a small revelation.

What Are Summer and Winter Onsen Tablets?

In Japan, onsen bath tablets (ε…₯桴剀, nyΕ«yokuzai) are a staple in many households. They simulate the therapeutic properties of hot springs and are available in seasonal variations β€” tailored to the body’s needs depending on the time of year.

Summer Onsen Tablets

Designed to refresh and cool the body during hot weather:

  • Menthol or mint extracts create a cooling aftereffect.
  • Citrus scents like yuzu, lemon, or grapefruit uplift and deodorize.
  • Microbubbles or fizzy carbonation lightly cleanse the pores.
  • Ideal for people who want to enjoy the ritual of bathing without feeling overheated.

❄️

Winter Onsen Tablets

Formulated for warmth and relaxation during the cold months:

  • Warming ingredients like ginger promote circulation and fight chills.
  • Milky or thicker textures help retain heat.
  • Deep, earthy aromas (like hinoki cypress or herbal blends) calm the senses.
  • Many contain moisturizers like hyaluronic acid or collagen for dry winter skin.

A New Summer Ritual?

I still enjoy my cold showers. But now, once or twice a week, I make time for a short soak with a summer tablet β€” especially in the evening after a long, sweaty day. There’s something deeply soothing about it, like pressing the reset button on your body.

It’s a gentle reminder that comfort isn’t always about extremes. Sometimes, it’s about finding that balance β€” like a warm bath that leaves you feeling cool.

If you’ve never tried a summer onsen tablet, give it a shot. You might be as surprised as I was.
