From Malty Salty to Sweet Sherry โ€“ A Toast to Shared Moments

During my recent visit to Hida Takayama, I picked up a bottle that had been on my radar for a whileโ€”the Sweet Sherry blended whisky from the local Hida Takayama Distillery. This wasnโ€™t just a spontaneous purchase triggered by the charming distillery shop or the picturesque alpine air. It was the natural continuation of a pleasant discovery I made last March.

Back then, I had bought a bottle of their Malty Salty blended whisky for a farewell party. I was curious about its unique name and flavor profileโ€”and honestly, I wasnโ€™t sure what to expect. But that bottle turned out to be the highlight of the evening. Everyone loved it. Its smoothness and character made it an instant crowd-pleaser, and to no oneโ€™s surprise, the bottle was emptied far quicker than expected.

That delightful memory stayed with me, and ever since, Iโ€™ve been curious about what else this distillery might have to offer. That curiosity led me straight to the Sweet Sherryโ€”another intriguing blend, this time matured in sherry casks. The name alone hints at a warmer, fruitier profile, and Iโ€™m excited to find out what nuances the sherry cask has brought to this blend. But not just yet.

I havenโ€™t opened the bottle. I donโ€™t plan toโ€”at least not until the right occasion arises. You see, Iโ€™m a social drinker. Whisky, to me, is best enjoyed in good company. Whether itโ€™s a celebration, a reunion, or just a night filled with laughter and meaningful conversation, whisky has a way of enhancing those shared moments.

So for now, the Sweet Sherry bottle sits patiently on the shelf, waiting for the next gathering that calls for a toast. And when that moment comes, Iโ€™m confident it will deliver just as beautifully as its Malty Salty sibling did.

Hereโ€™s to discoveries, to local craftsmanship, and above allโ€”to sharing the good stuff with the people around us.
