Hard Pruning Hedges: Wrong Timing?

Last year, I only lightly trimmed our hedge and partially hard pruned it in hopes of invigorating stronger growth, but unfortunately, it didnโ€™t take off as I had hoped.

This year, I made the decision to heavily hard prune our hedge several weeks ago. Looking back, I wonder if it was the right choice. This risky move might have stimulated new growth at an improper timeโ€”just before winter.

I’m concerned that the new growth may struggle to survive the winter months.

At this point, itโ€™s too late to change anything. I mulched the hedges to enhance the soil’s carbon content and keeping moisture in the soil, using the cuttings from the very hedge I pruned. It’s my first time employing this method, and I honestly have my doubts about its effectiveness.

Now, all I can do is wait for the new growth season to begin, holding onto hope that our hedge will flourish and return to its bushy self once again. Have you ever taken a risky step in gardening that made you anxious?
