Did you know? The QR Code, a common part of everyday life, has its origins in Masahiro Hara and his team at Denso Wave.

In 1994, they developed the Quick Response (QR) code primarily for tracking automotive parts during manufacturing. Little did they know that this innovation would go on to revolutionize countless industries.

Thanks to its capacity to store large amounts of data and its easy readability by scanners and smartphones, the QR code swiftly gained widespread adoption. Today, it’s used for everything from mobile payments to marketing, ticketing to product information, simplifying processes and enhancing connectivity in our daily lives.

This invention underscores Japan’s significant impact on global technology and everyday convenience.

I first saw QR codes in the 2000s in Europe for the first time. I didn’t think much about where they came from or what they meant. After all these years, it’s surprising to find out that ‘QR’ stands simply for ‘quick response’ and that it originated from the Japanese automotive part manufacturing industry. This fact certainly caught me by surprise.
