I’ve always been a dedicated audiophile, enjoying the finest music listening experiences with top-tier gear like the AKG K371 or the Hifiman Sundara over-ear headphones. However, ever since I moved from the Netherlands to Japan last year in March, an unexpected turn of events led me to explore a new realm of audio equipment: in-ear monitors (IEMs) like the Tinhifi T2 and the Blon BL-03.

Last year, as temperatures soared and humidity levels rose during the Japanese summer and rainy seasons, I found myself seeking relief from the discomfort of sticky, sweaty headphones. That’s when I decided to give IEMs a try, never imagining they would become my go-to choice for warm weather listening sessions.

It’s quite an unexpected discovery for meโ€”having separate “head-fi” gear for different seasons. In the summer, I now rely on IEMs to keep me cool and dry while indulging in my passion for music. Come winter, I’ll happily switch back to my trusty over-ear headphones to keep my ears snug and warm.

Who would’ve thought that the Japanese weather conditions would dictate my choice of audio gear? It’s a luxury problem, indeed, but one that highlights the versatility and adaptability of an audiophile’s arsenal.
