Deep in Gifu’s wild land, there’s a peaceful place for people who like fishing. My wife and I started this amazing trip a few hours ago. We went into the middle of Shirotoricho- Hokijima’s wild rivers.
Welcomed by our guides, we were taught how to fish in the mountains. We got our fishing passes on a smartphone app, and liked how organized and official it was, with daily accident insurance included. Even though the pass was in Japanese, our guides helped us through the process, which set the tone for the rest of the day.
We left our car and went on a rough trip in a kei car, driving on rough terrain that felt like a safari adventure. We made a quick toilet stop before our fishing adventure, so we could stay focused on the calm ahead.

At the fishing checkpoint, we dressed like anglers: special river boots with toe socks, comfortable quick-dry pants for the outdoors, and knee support for the rough terrain.

With our teachers’ help, we practiced using the fishing rod and perfected the circular swinging motion technique. They chose natural baits for us, which attracted the mysterious river creatures to our hooks.

We skillfully went into the river with the help of our companions. As we focused on fishing, time seemed unimportant, and the flowing water created a calming atmosphere, relieving us from the hot weather.

As the sun reached its highest point, we couldn’t catch any fish. But our experienced guides managed to catch a lotโa fresh fish for our lunch. Sitting around the fire, we enjoyed the grilled fish under the blue sky.

Our hearts were full of gratitude for this amazing fishing trip. It reminded us of the simple joy of exploring the wilderness. With newfound knowledge and admiration for bait fishing, we left feeling satisfied in both body and soul, realizing that this adventure was only the first of many to come.
