Understanding Donation Restrictions in Japan: A Blogger’s Experience with Stripe

I recently experimented with payment options on my WordPress website by activating a Stripe account and connecting it to my platform. Since I hadn’t launched any specific products or services yet, I opted to create a simple donation form linked to both my bank and Stripe account.

However, shortly after activating Stripe, I received a message notifying me that my Stripe account would be closed due to business restrictions within my industry. Unfortunately, Stripe didn’t provide specific details, leaving me uncertain about the exact issue.

In an effort to understand the situation better, I conducted some research to uncover potential reasons behind this restriction.

It appears that donations through a blog in Japan may be subject to legal regulations governing fundraising activities in the country. Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and charities typically require specific licenses or permissions to solicit donations legally. Furthermore, concerns regarding transparency, accountability, and the potential for misuse of funds could contribute to regulatory restrictions. To uphold compliance with the law and safeguard individuals from fraudulent activities, authorities may impose limitations on donation collection methods, including those through blogs or online platforms.

Upon discovering this information, I promptly removed the donation form from my blog and requested Stripe to close my account.
