My wife’s grandfather left behind a collection of stones in our home, some of which you can see in the pictures below.

We carefully selected one of the larger, more exquisite stones to display in our tokonoma (alcove).

Curious about the origins of this tradition, I delved into research and stumbled upon the term Suiseki.
Suiseki, which translates to “water stones” in Japanese, is an ancient art form originating from China (known as Gongshi) and Korea (known as Suseok). Introduced to Japan during the Asuka period (538-710 AD), it gained popularity among the Samurai ruling class during the Kamakura period (1183-1333 AD).
Despite not knowing the specific reason for my wife’s grandfather’s appreciation of stones, we’ve decided to honor his legacy by preserving and displaying them throughout our home. To us, these stones resemble natural pieces of art that seamlessly complement the traditional aesthetics of a Japanese home.
