Today, my wife suggested we visit a nearby yakiniku restaurant in Yanaizu, recommended by my mother-in-law.
For the uninitiated, yakiniku is a quintessential Japanese barbecue experience where thinly sliced meatsโtypically beef, pork, or chickenโare grilled over a charcoal or gas flame. The term “yakiniku” translates to “grilled meat” in Japanese, embodying the heart of this culinary tradition. It’s a popular dining experience in Japan, often found in restaurants equipped with built-in grills right at diners’ tables.
Here are some key aspects of Japanese yakiniku:
Variety of Meats: Yakiniku restaurants boast an array of meats, from classics like kalbi (short ribs) and Harami (skirt steak) to more adventurous options like tongue. These meats are often marinated or seasoned with a flavorful blend of soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, and other spices.
Interactive Grilling: One of the charms of yakiniku is the interactive nature of the dining experience. Diners take control of their meal, grilling their chosen cuts of meat to their preferred level of doneness right at their tables. It’s a social and enjoyable experience, perfect for gatherings with friends and family.
Accompaniments: Yakiniku is often accompanied by an array of side dishes, including rice, kimchi, pickled vegetables, and an assortment of dipping sauces. These sides complement the rich flavors of the grilled meat, adding depth and variety to the meal.
Sauces and Condiments: Dipping sauces like tare (a sweet soy sauce-based sauce) or sesame sauce are staples of the yakiniku experience. These sauces enhance the flavor of the grilled meat, elevating the dining experience to new heights.
Healthier Option: Compared to some other barbecue styles, yakiniku is often considered a healthier choice due to the thinly sliced nature of the meat, allowing excess fat to drip away during grilling.
Cultural Significance: Yakiniku holds significant cultural importance in Japan and is a favored option for various social occasions, celebrations, and casual dining outings.
In summary, Japanese yakiniku offers a delightful and interactive dining experience, blending the joy of grilling meat with the warmth of shared mealsโa culinary tradition cherished by locals and visitors alike.
I captured our yakiniku adventure with our new vlogging camera. Perhaps I’ll edit and upload our recordings to our YouTube channel, “KarlAndHiromiLifeInJapan,” at some point. Fair warning: my shooting, vlogging, and editing skills are still a work in progress.
Here are a few snapshots from today’s video recordings….sorry for the food porn:
