This morning, I set out to conquer Mount Kinka via the scenic trail leading up to Gifu Castle.

Once a month, my mother-in-law invites me to join her and her friends for a hike up Kinkazan, and I always accept with enthusiasm. She’s a seasoned hiker who knows every trail by heart, and each time we go, she chooses a different path up to Gifu Castle.

These hikes not only keep me active but also acquaint me with the diverse trails and stunning views along the way.

Today, we tackled the Hyakumagari hiking trail. “Hyakumagari” translated into “hundred turns” which obviously tells you what you can expect from this trail.

Despite being in her 70s, my mother-in-law frequents Mount Kinka every week, a practice she’s maintained for over a decade if not longer. Her unwavering commitment and youthful energy never ceases to amaze me.

While she used to rely on trains and buses to reach Kinkazan, last year, she treated herself to a brand new e-bike. Now, she effortlessly cruises from home to Kinkazan in just 30 minutes, a journey that rivals the time taken by car.

Here are some snapshots from today, capturing some breathtaking snowy peaks surrounding Gifu.
