After several hefty pruning sessions last few months, I found myself faced with a mound of leftover branches and pieces of tree trunks. Mulching it down manually seemed like an impossible task, leading me to explore alternative options.
Enter YouTube, my go-to source for ingenious solutions. That’s where I stumbled upon “Hügelkultur,” a gardening technique hailing from Germany that fascinated me.
In a nutshell, Hügelkultur involves burying stacked wood in the garden, layering it with mulch and soil. Over time, this organic amalgamation breaks down, transforming into nutrient-rich soil—a perfect bed for planting a variety of greens.
Legend has it, the Germans pioneered this method when grappling with a substantial amount of excess wood they were not allowed to burn. So instead of letting it to go to waste, they buried it in their gardens. While not an ancient practice, Hügelkultur has gained a devoted following among permaculture enthusiasts.
Fortuitously, I found myself with a surplus of unusable wood and a desire to elevate parts of our garden dominated by impenetrable clay. The solution? Embrace Hügelkultur as part of a garden makeover, enhancing soil fertility and reshaping the landscape.
So, on the seemingly universal day of rest—December 31st—I defied tradition. Armed with a shovel on a rainy day, I carved out a space amidst the mud and clay, crafting my very own Hügelkultur mound.
Because, really, if not today, then when? 🌱🌧️ #Hügelkultur #GardeningAdventure #SoilRevitalization #PermacultureMagic #NewYearNewGarden
