Today, while my wife and I were grocery shopping, I came across a unique Santa gift. Essentially, it’s wrapped and packed to resemble a stocking stuffed with gifts.
I’m familiar with a similar tradition in Switzerland and the Netherlands, where kids set out their shoes โ not stockings โ the night before “Sinterklaas” or “Samichlaus” arrives. The shoes get filled with small gifts and sweets during the night by Santa Claus.
Admittedly, I’m not an expert on this; it’s been quite a while since I celebrated that old Christian tradition. However, it seems that the Japanese have adopted the American and Canadian tradition of using stockings to receive gifts.
My wife mentioned that this particular gift is not typically given by parents to their own kids; instead, it is given from aunties to nephews, for example.
I was amazed to come across this tradition here in Japan. Despite being a predominantly Buddhist and Shintoist country with many diverse traditions unrelated to Jesus Christ, it’s fascinating to see the global influence of Christmas traditions.
