Just got back from helping my buddy set up his home lighting. I handed over my Philips Hue bridge and bulbs for testing at his place. Having used Philips smart lighting with Google Home in my old Dutch home, I always loved the convenience.
However, I no longer needed it, so I gifted the Philips smart lighting system to my buddy. He already had Ikea’s smart home lighting system, and surprisingly, we found a way to combine the two. If the lamps use the Zigbee protocol, the Philips Hue bridge and Ikea smart bulbs can work seamlessly together. We even managed to sync the motion sensors, color settings, and Ikea remote controls with the smartphone.
It was a bit fiddly, but we eventually got it all set up. My buddy is thrilled with this tech, but I’m leaning towards simpler, less geeky systems now.
In Japan, the only lighting tech I installed was motion sensor lighting for the porch, entrance hall, toilet, and engawa. No voice commands or smartphone appsโjust simple and straightforward.
Speaking of which, I’m thinking of adding some outdoor night lights in our garden. They’ll be solar-powered and definitely not smart lights…or maybe they are smart lights after all because they will just charge up during daylight time and light up during night time…
Anyway, came home late to write this post, and smart lighting was all I could think about. Apologies for the geeky post. If you’re into this stuff, feel free to share your thoughts!
