I often find myself saying I’m Swiss as a quick response when people inquire about my background. However, this seemingly straightforward answer can lead to confusion, especially when I respond in Dutch to Dutch individuals.
The disbelief is palpable, written across their faces. I can almost hear their thoughts, “…but you look Chinese,” or the puzzled comments like, “I thought you were Dutch because you speak Dutch so well.” That’s when I clarify that I’m also Thai, explaining my Asian appearance.
Then I see their minds blowing upย ๐Ÿคฏ, which never gets old for me.
Even in Japan, where locals immediately assume I’m Japanese, revealing my Swiss identity doesn’t necessarily change their behavior. They continue conversing in Japanese, as if my nationality hasn’t been mentioned…..weird ๐Ÿ˜…
No matter where I am in the world, it seems I’m destined to be misunderstood. I’ve come to accept that I’m an odd duck, navigating a unique path through the complexities of identity and nationality.
