Furikake is a versatile and flavorful Japanese seasoning blend that is typically sprinkled over rice, vegetables, and other dishes to enhance their taste.
My youngest sister loves furikake.
But she lives in the Netherlands and furikake isn’t as easily available there as it is here in Japan.
I will be going to the Netherlands soon and I will bring her all the different kind of furikake I can get from my local supermarket, Yoshizuya.
Furikake is here is as normal in Japan as is “hagelslag” in the Netherlands.
Dutch hagelslag is a popular and beloved Dutch food item that consists of small, sweet sprinkles typically used as a topping for bread and butter or other breakfast foods.
The Japanese sprinkle their rice with furikake and the Dutch sprinkle their buttered bread with hagelslag.
Even though I have been living in the Netherlands for over 30 years, I never liked eating hagelslag, furikake on the other hand I sprinkle on rice more often these days.
I guess I am less of a sweet tooth and more of a savory tooth.
